  25. Two reasons off the top of my head:
  26. 1. They believe owning the technology is cheaper than licensing it.
  27. 2. They can keep the technology out of the hands of competitors.

  29. The real question is what they intend to do with the technology once
  30. they own it , and whether those plans include the personal computer market,
  31. a market quite distinct from the set top box market.
